HorseBoard Forums / Tampa Bay Tote Crash
Last post by Horse’s Rear - Mar 11, 2024, 02:49 PM
The big news in racing this weekend was the failure of the tote system immediately before the running of the Tampa Bay Derby, causing that track's biggest race to be run as a non-wagering event, and forcing many wagers to be refunded.

Full disclosure: I had bet in advance winning combinations in the trifecta and Superfecta pools, so I am among those especially aggrieved at the cancellation.

But I suspect that the big story has not emerged yet, and will be either the blow that kills racing or catalyzes the change it desperately needs to survive.

Does anyone here have any experience with the cancellation? Bad beat stories? Theories or opinions about what happened? I have a theory about what happened, and I am surprised that so far the industry seems to be getting away with what seems a fairly obvious coverup.

I'm curious if anyone else is following this story, which so far is succeeding in not being told.

No one was ever more suited by circumstance and temperament for a global pandemic than I. Two and a half years before it arrived, I got married; twenty months before it arrived, I was widowed. Six months before it arrived, I retired and moved all my books home. During isolation I developed two mail order hobbies: buying suits to wear when it ended (bad idea—I outgrew them all during lockdown) and curating a wine cellar (great idea—there is no better investment in quality home entertainment!)

The beginning of the pandemic and isolation in 2020 coincided with the death of my boyfriend of 36 years after his three-year long health battle that we knew he would lose.  Hiding and withdrawing from the world suited me perfectly at the time.  A little over fours years later I've learned to find as much genuine pleasure I can out of the smallest things that come my way and to be thankful for them.

HorseBoard Forums / Stories of the Pandemic ..?
Last post by De Troll - Mar 07, 2024, 06:09 AM

...... under the thought of "Don't everyone talk a once" ..?

Wondered if folks had "interesting" stories of events related to what might be considered as a "Time Warp"..?

I personally had some adventures.. I might have been less effected than most .. already reclusive and a bit of a hoarder.. my story begins with "old house and old plumbing" issues.. That required having a "port-a-John" on south end of my front porch for over a year.. Turned into having my main bathroom redone.. Old tub configuration converted into a walk-in shower.. That included trips to "old John" in the dead of winter .. with a flashlight .. and having the "thing" blown off the porch during a wind storm.. The only positives .. having a place to go .. and the servicing company .. supplying the toilet paper .. : )
It all worked out .. as plumbing issues where resolved and bathroom redo was completed .. and now the memories of an assortment of minor traumas has faded (almost) ..  8)

Quote from: Horse's Rear on Mar 04, 2024, 03:12 PMWhat I am doing w this exercise is looking for a good price winner.

Typically, when I look for a winner, what I find is a reasonable horse at a short price. And these days, most prices are overbet, and most short prices are badly overbet, often during the running.

So the goal here is to reverse the process, and find the price first.

....... I can't argue with that .. one of the reason I lost interest in wagering .. was it got difficult to find a price horses.. When a horse with longer odds did win .. I would go back over the PP's and couldn't find a reason why the horse out-ran his history ..?

A truly bad bunch of horses produced a truly bad result. Final order of finish (after odd pace decisions):
7-1-3-4-2-6.

........ in essence .. you are looking for an "ice cold" super High Five in a 6th race somewhere.. Guess you could box the first 4 choices and single the 5th choice .. putting $2 on the nose of 5th choice ..?

..... as I haven't followed the horses for a good while .. I struggle to find a first choice that hits the board ..? Good fortune on you play .. :)
